In 1904, the area where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect endured a name change from Long Acre Square to the New York Times Square, after the moniker of the New York Times building.  

Dating back to the 70s through the early 90s, notorious gangs of the upper east coast had a stranglehold on the New York Times Square, plaguing the five points area with prostitution, sex shops and other high crimes.

Commercial tenants, who make up the area, are required to display flashy bright neon lights.
